On 21 October, UNITAC Hamburg organized a virtual event as part of Urban October 2021. The session explored three of the most impactful developments of our times: Climate change, urbanization and digital innovation. Cities of all sizes are growing rapidly and urban areas are responsible for around 70 per cent of global carbon emissions.

eThekwini has the largest number of informal settlements of any municipality in South Africa. Currently, it houses over 580 urban informal settlements encompassing 314,000 households, which comprises over a quarter of the city’s population. Continued urbanization and a swingling supply of well-located land have resulted in a multitude of vulnerabilities experienced by its population.

UN-Habitat, the United Nations agency for sustainable cities, with support from the UN Office for Information and Communications Technology (UN-OICT), and in collaboration with HafenCity University Hamburg, are implementing the United Nations Innovation Technology Accelerator for Cities (UNITAC Hamburg) which will be located at the HafenCity University in Hamburg, Germany.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the UN Office for ICT (UN-OICT), HafenCity University and the Federal Republic of Germany are organising a virtual event to officially launch the United Nations Innovation Technology Accelerator for Cities (UNITAC-Hamburg). The UN Innovation Technology Accelerator, led by UN-Habitat in collaboration with UN-OICT and HafenCity University, will be based in Hamburg and is funded by the Government of Germany.
