UN-Habitat is pleased to invite you to the  The role of Innovation and Technology in accelerating Sustainable Urbanization online side event, to be held within the framework of The High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the progress in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda. Kindly find below all information related to the event

With the support of the Government of France and the French Network of Urban Planning Agencies (FNAU) as well as the Government of Germany, this side event will offer an opportunity to understand from a multi-stakeholder panel the potential of developing sustainable cities within the wider digital transformation context, hereby highlighting the impending nexus of technology, data and innovation. The debate will demonstrate the role of national and local governments, private sector, academia in applying digital technologies, data and innovative practices to accelerate the localization of the New Urban Agenda, emphasizing impact for upscaling of noble solutions as a vehicle for achieving the targets of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

Hence, by participating to a discussion gathering representatives from national and local governments, academia, public financing institutions and the private sector, this side event is intended to stress the importance of utilizing digital technologies and data fairly and ethically for cities and human settlements to make cities smarter, but also more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. While being aware of the different pace at which countries and cities innovate and in respect of contextual peculiarities, there is the need for globally shared principles for Member States to steer their digital transformation and sustainable urbanization in an inclusive and fair way.

This is one of a series of discussion contributing to the urban dimension of the multi-stakeholder digital technology track for the Summit of the Future, taking place in September 2023. In preparation to that, a resolution for the preparation of (universal) “People-centered Smart City Guidelines” at the Habitat Assembly in 2023 shall be requested, outlining, how national and local governments can better use digital technologies and data to implement the New Urban Agenda and strengthen the smart and sustainable urban development in their cities
